Girls Basketball Skills Development Clinics

We want to provide a welcoming place for 5th and 6th grade girls to develop skills and play basketball games in the winter months before the local Swish season starts. We hope this uplevels the skill level of girls basketball in the county of Santa Cruz and makes us more competitive as our girls get into highschool and college.

Secret Intent:

We are about empowering girls to find their voices, their inner strength, and their confidence. In a world where media teaches girls to “play nice” “be seen not heard” and to sacrifice for others, we encourage them to be aggressive, fully self expressed, and to go after what they want.

Skill Level:

All levels welcome. The girls will be divided up by skill level so players can develop confidence playing against others around their level of skill and experience.

Teaching Focus:
  • Individual skills: passing, dribbling, shooting, free throws, defensive slides, boxing out and rebounding, blocking shots.

  • Team Skills: Team offense, back door cuts, ball movement, pick and rolls, how to drive and kick, team defense, Zone and Man-to-Man defense, helping when someone needs help on defense.

  • Empowerment: girls are often taught to “be nice”, “play nice”, “share with others” and sacrifice themselves for others. Here they will be encouraged to be aggressive, to own their power, to go after what they want, and be loud about it all!

  • Mindset: how to win and lose with grace, how to support teammates, how to commit to a team and learn skills to accomplish something as part of a group, how athletics builds character, tenacity and grit.

We will teach and do drills for skill development then play games each time we meet.
Location: We will be using the Holy Cross Gym on Sundays from 1:30-3 PM. Check-in is at 1:20 PM each Sunday.

Insurance: all players will be required to sign up with AAU and register under Gabe Gonzales team “SC Premier” so they are covered by insurance.

Max Players: The first 28 that sign up and pay will be accepted. There are six hoops in the gym and we can run two games simultaneously side by side.

Coaching Staff: May include Ben Saltzman, Wayne McFadden, Marco Gonzales, Ronald Francis, Alex Cartagena, Martita Emde, Chris Kibe, and Jameelah Johnson.

We need two more coaches for this clinic. If you have basketball experience, would like to learn how to coach from experienced coaches, and want to join us to coach these players, please reach out and let us know.
