Donald Trump is an Enneagram Type Eight… Moral Development is at the Red Level!!!

Comments

  1. This explains a lot!
    Thanks.

    • Hi Ben, thanks for sharing!
That’s what I always felt: he is an 8 and it seems that many of his expressions come from a low level.
I believe and I hope that a person is not only red or has at least at any time the chance to get out of the archaic impulses and combine them with higher levels (which must be there also).
The most negative expressions (of an 8 f.e.) are probably connected to negative points of attacks … like a mirror, aren’t they?
So what would happen if we appreciated his natural power of leadership-quality instead of supporting a 1 who wants to have power but doesn’t have it inherent??
I like your way of presentation; it is necessary to be alert. Now let our hearts take over and not give in to fear!

  2. Lol. I thought he was a 3 with all those TRUMP signs!! But I recognize his blind anger and lashing out and, as an 8 myself, that bravado has no effect on me. His bravado is the bravado of a bully that lashes out empty words that sound powerful to a 3rd grader – stupid, crooked, dumb….. I see his act and automatically don’t trust him.

You are so right about objectifying people. Its work to get out of that pattern. He is not going to change when he’s president. It will only get worse because, as you said Ben, he will be the one on top. And from there, its even harder to remember that other people are not objects.

I’ve had conversations with people that think that he will change things others can’t… All I think is, ONLY if he is interested in that change and only to benefit HIMSELF. Even from that position of so much power, he will still be asking himself “what’s in it for me?”

Great video Ben! Enlightening and illuminating. And also, very disturbing. I would love to hear your take on why it is that it is so obvious to many of us that this is a very damaged, frightened, and dangerous man who should NEVER be allowed anywhere near positions of national or international power, and yet there are so many who seem to not recognize this and are attracted to what they seem to misperceive as his strength. Why do you think some people are blind to what seems so obvious and why others are so horrified by his being so unhinged? Are there certain types who are more inclined to see pathology as strength? Why do some find Trump so appealing and others so frightening?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated, from you or other responders.
    Thanks

    • Hi Charlie, I think what distinguishes those who see him as “strong” and those who see his brand of strength as potentially dangerous has to do, not with Ennea-type, but with level of development (spiritual development, moral development, level of consciousness). The higher levels have more capacity for dealing with the the vast complexities and paradoxes of reality. These more highly developed people are: both/and thinkers, systems thinkers, non-dual practitioners, people of compassion and humility. They have the ability to compassionately witness the ego vs identifying with the conditioned self. They are able to go beyond right-wrong, black and white thinking. It takes inner discipline to develop this level of being….and if you’re really scared of showing weakness (as Donald apparently is), you’d have no interest in going there.

The way to influence him, though, is to appeal to his self-interest. That’s where the leverage lies. There might be a win-win in this situation somewhere…..if we-the-people can figure out how, e.g., to make him the biggest hero of all time by keeping us out of war (I really mean additional wars). This is a time to be strategic.

  4. Thanks Ben. That was helpful to understand the underlying cause of such objectification of others! Yes, it is very scary. Sending the man light; may he find peace in his lifetime and do no (more) harm.

Thank you Ben for another great explanation of type. I’m wondering how much type matters it doesn’t matter when there is a clear chemical imbalance or mental illness, because it feels like Trump is not entirely sane.

  6. So glad to see you articulate this, Ben – I have been having similar thoughts, and you stated it even better.

  7. Thanks for presenting this in such a considered, balanced, and in-depth-yet-accessible way.

When Trump threw his hat into the race, I thought, maybe he’s ORANGE enough (I didn’t watch the apprentice) he could bridge between BLUE and GREEN factions. Then I started listening to him and paying attention to him and I realized he was really connecting with people at the RED level, and it has only really become more and more extreme as the race has continued.

Every now and again someone will say he’s different in private, he will be different in office, and I wonder how true that could ever be. Me thinks never.

And considering him as a Type Eight and where he’s at with that as well …

Thank you for providing your insights and ending the clip on an upbeat, hopeful note!

    I’ll be sharing it.

    • Well, it looks like he has a foot in Orange and a lot of moral ideas in Red (this is the scary part for me) in the continued policy of divide, take power over, and bully those weaker than you are. So what happens when the weaker ones still have big weapons that can cause a lot of damage?

      Ben

  8. Thank you Ben,
I intuitively sense the same. Real fear of his red-eyed bull blindness. I compared him with Stalin but I think now that Stalin was probably type 6 – sneakier. Appreciating you for giving this clear picture of Type 8.

  9. Fascinating and right on. I’m curious if you have a sense of what might be the Types that are attracted to and/or comforted by this type of personality.

  10. Very interesting… And I think right on. We are now seeing him lash out more and more as his political defeat is almost assured.

I wish Donald Trump a whole lot of nurturing, transforming unconditional love. He is going to need it!

And I’m curious, Ben, if you have any insights on Hillary?

The most negative expressions (of an 8 f.e.) are always reactions to negative point of attacks … like a mirror, aren’t they?
What would happen if we appreciated his natural power of leadership-quality instead of supporting a 1 who wants to have power but doesn’t have it naturally??
I like your way of presentation. However I was asking myself if you are kind of type 6… “Don’t give in to your fears. If you do, you won’t be able to talk to your heart.”

  12. As an Enneagram teacher, it is fascinating to watch the debate over Trump. It is obvious to me that Trump is a counter phobic 6 with a large 7 wing. In Riso terms, he is average to low functioning. He also spends a lot of time devolving to 3 with fearful motivations that express as ‘image obsession’ and the need to be successful and admired.
Regarding the idea that he is an 8………..while an 8 will appear willful and lustful, an 8 will NOT waver, stutter-step and flip flop. Trump’s ‘lust’ is the 7 wing. He is a classic sexual sub-type 6 with appearance concerns ( fake hair, spray-tan and capped teeth) with the manic desires of a low functioning 7 showing in his wing. Trump’s Defense Secretary, General Mattis is an 8; no preening……….just a tough guy who is unwavering.

The slightly good news is that Trump will threaten ( as counter phobic sixes do) and then will step back.
The bad news is that he is very much like Richard Nixon ( another low functioning 6) and could order stupid actions out of petty revenge that could proliferate.

I think if you look closely at Trump, you will see the contradictions, fears and inner confusions of a low functioning 6. Give it a try!
